Yes, you basically can do both. You can make your work password protected and give the password and the link to the client. That way only you and that specific client can see the work. You could have a different password for each client. You can also set up your work so that only you can see it and have the client purchase from you and you place the order and ship to the client. I am preparing to do customized portraits and digital artwork that will be for specific clients. I would like to be able to give a private link to my clients (once I have uploaded the customized pictures & art) so they can purchase the photobook directly. If not, it seems you have an excellent turnaround time- and if a client pays me in advance, I can then order myself. If, I have to choose the second option of ordering myself, is it ok to ship it to the client instead of me?
