I'm a digital scrapbooker and use Photoshop Elements to create the pages of the books I have printed here. The jpeg option is simple and easy to use and the end result looks great!

Hi Mary Lou,
I always use photoshop. Simple, straight forward, safe, what you see is what you get. I just always make my pages 300 ppi and flatten all layers (text layers, etc...). I'm not sure support answered your question about quality (maybe in the links they provided?) jpeg vs. pdfs, but the jpeg option is so simple. Judy

Mary Lou, hmmmm, I'm not sure I can give you a best answer because either works with our system. We convert .jpgs to PDFs for printing so that fonts are embedded. If you upload a PDF you are responsible for making sure the fonts are embedded. If they are not embedded properly even if you see the text on your screen the text may print as gibberish and that would not be a print error. Maybe I could just give some advice on PDFs

When you upload a PDF our system will automatically select the book trim size that most closely matches your PDF size.

As a caution, when uploading PDF's with the cover included with the file. Covers and interiors are printed separately. When the front cover is removed from your uploaded file, the pages will be offset by 1 so plan for that in your layout. So if you have 2-page spreads make sure they will layout the way you plan after a page has been removed.

NOTE: The best way to Upload a PDF
login,
go to your my account page (link to that page is in the upper right of the screen)
select upload PDF (under the products column)
give your product a title
For the Interior PDF File browse to get the PDF from your PC
Pick the correct action for Front Cover and Back Cover fields
Select the upload pdf button

Here are a few links to some of our pages on PDFs

http://www.prestophoto.com/wiki/PDF+Creation+FAQ
http://www.prestophoto.com/wiki/PDF+Creation+Specifications

I would read each carefully some of the information may apply to you and some may not.

Also we power a site that has a very active forum and the creators are knowledgeable about PDFs. Check it out at http://www.photoshopcreativeelements.com

Hope this helps and please let us know if you have any more questions!

In Design or Photoshop???

Posted:26 Jan 2008 (09:48 UTC)
I am trying to find a way to produce a book that will be "my way"() with layout and backgrounds. Is it best to do a book in In Design and submit it as a pdf or is it best to design the pages in Photoshop and submit them as jpegs? Either way will require work in Photoshop I suppose the real question is if the pdf is as good (from your point of view) as the jpegs? I am looking at perhaps 100 or more pages. If text is included in the jpeg does it really need to be converted to curves prior to saving??? Can you help me? mary lou
