Barney looked up at me with sad knowing eyes. When we arrived at the vetrinarian's office, he got out of the car and walked over to water a tree and then followed me into the clinic. When I turned to leave, he turned also, ready to walk out the door with me. I knelt down hugged him tight, gave him a kiss and gently put him into the hands of a caretaker. My heart was in my throat.
